FIFA World Cup 2022: Teams qualified for Round of 16 – France, Brazil make cut – get full list
France, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina and 12 other teams have made the knockouts in Qatar. Know all the teams qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16.
With the conclusion of the group stage in Qatar, the FIFA World Cup 2022 will move into its Round of 16 stage.
The 32 teams competing in the Qatar 2022 World Cup were divided into eight groups – Group A to H – for the first phase. In each group, each team faces each other once in a single-header round robin format, and the top two teams from each group qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 – the first of the knockout stages.
Defending champions France, from Group D, are the first team to advance to the Round of 16 after winning their first two group games convincingly. Les Bleus first beat Australia 4-1 and beat Denmark 2-1.
With it, France became the first defending champions since Brazil in 2006 to avoid a group stage exit from the FIFA World Cup. Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and Germany in 2018 were knocked out at the group stage. France, however, lost their last group game against Tunisia but still finished ahead of Australia.
Kylian Mbappe has been the standout player for France so far and is one of the frontrunners for the FIFA World Cup 2022 top scorer award.
Likewise, Cody Gakpo led the Netherlands’ campaign as the Dutch qualified for the Round of 16 as the top team from Group A. A late goal from captain Kalidou Koulibaly, meanwhile, helped Senegal see off Ecuador in their final group game, with a virtual play-off to play for as the second-placed team from a group.
England also won the group with two wins and a draw in Group B. Meanwhile, a goal by Christian Pulisic in the crucial final against Iran helped the USA men’s soccer team advance from Group B as the second-placed team.
Despite missing star Neymar due to injury, Brazil won their first two matches (2-0 vs. Serbia and 1-0 vs. Switzerland) to seal an early ticket to the knockouts from Group G. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal also beat Ghana 3-2 and Uruguay 3-2 to make a trouble-free cut for the knockouts from Group G.
Lionel Messi’s Argentina shook off an upset defeat against Saudi Arabia to top Group C and advance to the round of 16, while Poland saw off a tough challenge from Mexico courtesy of a superior goal difference to advance as the second-placed side.
The Netherlands, Senegal, England, USA, France, Australia, Argentina, Poland, Morocco, Croatia, Japan, Spain, Brazil, Switzerland, South Korea and Portugal have qualified for the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
Qatar, after losing their first two games, were the first team to crash out of the race for the round of 16. The hosts eventually ended their campaign on a disappointing note, losing all three of their group matches.
